The Shrine of El Cobre, with its richly adorned statue of the Virgin Mary, is located between Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo in the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba. The Merciful Virgin of Cobre (Spanish: Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre) is a wooden statue revered since 1612 and is the most important pilgrimage site in Cuba. On March 27, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI paid tribute to the Virgin of El Cobre during his pilgrimage to Cuba on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of her discovery, presenting her with a Golden Rose. Santiago is influenced by both Spanish and French cultures, most visibly seen in the Tivolí neighborhood, which emerged during the wave of French settlers and their slaves.
